The Makings of a Great Auctioneer

48 years ago, the Cadzows’ were seeking something that was outside of the normal grind that would allow them to do something they loved while also giving people a wonderful experience. They found their passion in Western Sales Management which stands for WSM Auctions, in Phoenix, Arizona.

Today WSM Auctions has at least twelve auctions per year and some online auctions as well. But what does it take to host one of these auctions? What does it take to truly be an auctioneer?

Let’s start with the auctioneer himself. How many auctioneers do you know? Chances are, not very many and the reason for that is because it is not an easy profession! Most people wouldn’t even know where to start on how to become one, let alone on how to run the whole business.

Everybody knows what an auctioneer is but nobody knows how to get there. There is an idea of how to become almost anything else from newscaster to consultant to actor, but you can’t just start auctioneering. You can’t set up a soapbox on a street corner and start selling things. You have to have an auction in place. To become an auctioneer, you generally have to work for an auction company. You have to put in five, six years there. And to get a job at an auction company is one of the hardest things to do.

Which is why John Cadzow decided to take over the company from his dad in 2002. He was ready to take over the company with fresh ideas and new technology, which is the other aspect of being an auctioneer in the business. It takes more than just one man to put on auctions, but with help, John is able to provide the same level of care and service that his dad was able to provide all those years ago.

5 Things You Didn’t Know You Could Buy at Auction

There are some items you expect to see at an auction: antiques, service trucks or artwork are just a few examples of common items up for bid. Other auctions can leave you scratching your head, with items for sale that you never thought you’d see at an auction. As auctions evolve, they open up new opportunities for buyers as well as sellers.

There are plenty of items that may be taking up space at home that you might be able to sell at auction. Thankfully, our friends at WSM Auctioneers in Phoenix, AZ, have you covered. There’s a market of buyers out there ready to bid on those clunky items laying around your yard or house. For buyers, more options are always a good thing. No matter how obscure an item may seem, there’s someone out there who’s selling it.

A Smart Car

Who knew you could by a smart car at an auction? This is a first for us! You can actually bid on this vehicle at their next upcoming auction on March 9th. Lucky for you, you don’t even need to be on-site to bid, you can do it from the comfort of your own home. Check out their website to see the full stock of vehicles they will be auctioning off March 9th.

A Trailer Grill

You heard us right, a trailer grill! This grill has two grills and can easily be pulled behind any vehicle with a hitch. This cool item sells Saturday, March 9th at WSM Auctioneers in Phoenix. This would be the perfect item for a non-profit organization that hosts a lot of outdoor events or maybe a hobby BBQ’er who is ready to take their skill to the next level.

Yard Art & Statues

There is a large market for anything to do with landscaping, especially if you are in the home improvement business. The great thing about auctions is that you can get a swinging deal on something if you are at the right place at the right time, but you won’t know unless you play! The only catch is you have to be present and onsite in order to bid on these items.

Horse Drawn Buggy

This might be one of the odder items found at the auction. The famous saying does go, “One man’s junk is another man’s treasure.” These are the kinds of items that you can get for a steal depending on the crowd that day. That is the exciting thing about an auction is not knowing what you will or won’t go home with.

Camper

Is anyone in the market for a camper? One lucky winner is going home with a Tahoe Camper! This is a perfect example of something that you never know what you find and everything is sold “as is”. The auction is a perfect place to find large items that you can flip for more money or even keep the item for yourself.

Make it Unique

If you’re thinking about buying or selling truly unique items through an auction, the first step is determining how unusual those items actually are. At WSM Auctioneers, they appraise your items to give you a better understanding of their value. The appraisal is a rough estimate, so there are no guarantees an item will sell for a quoted price at auction. On the other hand, the item could spark a bidding war and go for a higher price than expected. When you have a unique item on your hands, some people are willing to pay more than face value to get it.

If you’re a buyer, you can use WSM Auctioneers to find unique items you won’t find anywhere else, such as industrial machinery, new home additions, and much more. Don’t know where to start? Check out our ever-changing list of current and upcoming auctions.

How the Town of Queen Creek is Staying True to its Roots

From its conception, the Town of Queen Creek was started on the same home-grown culture and values that you see today. Before we get into how this cute little is able to keep its heritage alive and well, we thought we could give you a little insight on Queen Creek’s history.

Surprisingly, Queen Creek used to go by a different name. Back then, the area was known as Rittenhouse because of the railroad spur located near Rittenhouse and Ellsworth roads. People used to flag down the train to get a ride into Phoenix. As the community grew, and the use of the railroad stop diminished, the community changed its name and took on the name Queen Creek.

Today Queen Creek is preparing for new additions to its rich cultural diversity. The rapid expansion experienced by nearby cities in the 1980s continues today. The Town of approximately 24,000 citizens faces inevitable growth. It incorporated in 1989 to preserve the benefits of rural life while providing an avenue for managed change. Residents seek to preserve the Town’s friendly, small town spirit while providing economic and recreational opportunities and a high quality of life.

There are many avenues in which Queen Creek is keeping its heritage intact and one of those ways is through Horseshoe Park & Equestrian Centre, which is home to several events throughout the year.

Horseshoe Park and Equestrian Centre is a majestic, 38 acre facility, located in the Phoenix metropolitan area. This venue provides ample opportunity for events of both the English and Western equestrian persuasion, as well as home shows, RV and car shows, concerts and weddings.

This beautiful event center relies on its volunteers and dedicated sponsors to keep the centre in good running order. One of those sponsors is one of our very own, WSM Auctioneers. WSM sponsors this event center, not only because it gains them exposure from event to event but because this is a cause they can stand behind. Much like the way Queen Creek is preserving its heritage, WSM continues their own legacy through the art of auctions.

Cowboy Lifestyle Network is proud to partner with WSM Auctioneers and Roots N’ Boots Queen Creek to help provide visibility for events and organizations that promote the heritage of the Town of Queen Creek.

A Day in the Life of an Auctioneer

Colt Oder Scottsdale Rodeo

Colt Oder is here to show you how it's done! Watch his highlights below and get ready to see him live at WestWorld of Scottsdale in less than two weeks

Posted by Rodeo Scottsdale on Friday, February 22, 2019

You can plan on seeing some of the best bullfighters in the game such as Weston Rutkowski, who is number one in the standings right now, Kris Furr, who is third in the standings and many more! This is the chance to see the toughest dance on dirt up close and personal.

If you are new to the sport of freestyle bullfighting, here’s how it works. There are three main components to each performance, judging, time, and the bull. Each bullfighter has a possibility of 100 points total, 50 for his performance and 50 for the bull’s performance, much like a bull ride but there isn’t anyone riding the bull. Every competitor will 60 seconds to get the job done with the option to be done after 40 seconds without penalty. Finally, the bull itself plays a huge part in this sport. The Spanish Fighting Bull is specifically bred to be engaged and naturally “charge” the bullfighters. All that stands between the bullfighter and the bull is a thin layer of protection.

All of this action is going down March 7-9 at Westworld in Scottsdale, Arizona in conjunction with Scottsdale Rodeo. Which is a show all on its own! To check out their full schedule of events, make sure to visit their website. You can catch live updates by following Cowboy Lifestyle Network on Facebook and Instagram. The whole CLN team is looking forward to seeing you!

A Community Built on Passion for the Western Industry

There is something to be said for a business that is built on true passion and foundational values that can’t be taught or bought. That is exactly what WSM Auctioneers is creating. Between bulls at the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) and bullfighters in American Freestyle Bullfighting (AFB), WSM is creating a community that some can only dream of.

If you are wondering what kind of business is able to accomplish the great feat of creating such a wonderful community, then wonder no further. WSM Auctioneers is based out of Phoenix, Arizona and gives new life to vehicles, tractor supplies, construction materials, and so many other types of industrial equipment. You never know what you are going to find at WSM Auctions.

WSM Auctions has prided themselves on the reputation they have built for being fair and honest in their auctions. Not only do they host public auctions for folks to come and bid their hearts out, but they also take consignments that allow you to make money on assets you have possibly sitting around your house.

When John, owner of WSM, decided he wanted to pursue other avenues to represent his business, he went with what he loved, the Western industry. This is the reason why you will find his iconic logo on the jersey of “Sasquatch”, bullfighter for American Freestyle Bullfighting and Bullfighters Only (BFO), the shirts and helmets of multiple riders in the PBR and of course, a proud partner of Cowboy Lifestyle Network.

CLN Insider: Life of a Stock Contractor

Garth Brooks says it best, “ it’s bulls and blood, it’s dust and mud, it’s the roar of a Sunday crowd…” all of this pertaining to the great thing we call, a rodeo. Some people are born into it, some have the fire to start from scratch, and some aren’t blessed with the opportunity until later in life. There is no wrong way to get there, either way, you end up on rodeo road and you just never look back.

I am going to be perfectly honest with you all, I truly, one hundred percent wanted to be a stock contractor. No joke! Something about the production of the show, the care of the stock, the lifestyle, I wanted it. I wanted it so bad, I was doing all the research I could to figure out how to get started. Little did I know what battles lay ahead of me if I had gone that route, but the lifestyle still fascinates me. For this CLN Insider, I wanted to give you the inside scoop on stock contracting. The backbone of any successful rodeo.

For most rodeo goers, you sit on the edge of your seat when the gates are pulled and the bull or bronc comes flying out with a cowboy on his back, but that is all you see. The show starts and ends there for everyone watching, but there is a whole back production that goes on in order for that bull or bronc to come out of that gate safely.

Stock contractors know their stock, inside and out. They know how they sit in the chute, they know how they are going to come out, they know whether they are going to run or come right to the gate; these are all things that play a part in the show you see in the arena. The contractor then has to relay that information to the pick-up men who, really, are the heroes on horseback. Most pick-up men who travel with the same contractor get to know the stock just as well as the contractors do, in most cases.

There is so much more to it than just the “eight-second ride”, most people don’t see the countless hours put in taking care of sick stock, the hours on the road, or feeding the animals before even feeding themselves. Being a stock contractor isn’t just about providing the animals for the show, it’s a lifestyle that you have to love and be dedicated to. I have been lucky enough to know a few contractors in my short time, and let me tell you, it is so much more than “the boots and chaps and cowboy hats”.

I hope you enjoyed this CLN Insider, brought to you by all of the great stock contractors that have inspired me over the years. I am looking forward to doing a more in-depth article on contracting a little later, but if you liked this article, make sure to share it and follow Cowboy Lifestyle Network on social media.
