History of Lost Dutchman Days Rodeo in Apache Junction, AZ

The 55th Annual Lost Dutchman Days Rodeo & Parade is right around the corner; but how does an event that attracts over 30,000 people from across the world end up in a little town called Apache Junction? We have the privilege of being able to let you in on this story and it’s one you won’t forget!

In order to do the story justice, we have to set the scene for you. Imagine, it is November in 1964. At the time, some popular “rodeo” events included timed cowhide drag, boots and saddle partnership race, jackpot roping and team tying, a $5 jackpot barrel race, flag races, potato races and ribbon races (two horses tied together at the saddle horns with a 7- or 8-foot ribbon and run through a course with barrels, taking care not to break the ribbon). These events are nothing like the popular events we know today.

Back then it used to just be Lost Dutchman “Day” and it all started when the Apache Sentinel released a small 3-inch announcement in the November 27, 1964 issue, the Chamber of Commerce announced to the citizens of Apache Junction that the very first Lost Dutchman “Day” was coming , and will be held on January 23, 1965. It is absolutely crazy to think that the event we know today evolved from that small, one day event back in 1965.

Back then there was a free pancake breakfast, art show, a “Horse Picnic”, a barbeque, and the dance that rounded out the festivities. Today we play off of those same events starting our weekend off on Thursday, February 21st, 2019 with a Beer & Brat Party at the Apache Junction Elks Lodge. The following three days are jam packed with rodeo action starting at 1:30 pm each day. There will be a rodeo dance to kick off the weekend on Friday, the 22nd at the Apache Junction Elks Lodge. We are happy to announce, all these years later, we still have an Art Show that displays local artisans and their crafty wares at the Apache Junction City Complex on Saturday, February 23rd. Of course, what rodeo would be complete without a carnival and vendors? There will be no shortage of vendors or carnival rides this year at Lost Dutchman Days, make sure to come out and enjoy the fun as we celebrate all 55 years of this great, western tradition.

It wasn’t until 1971 that the three things came together and Lost Dutchman Days, as most people know it today, came together and was actually born. From that one day celebration in 1965, Lost Dutchman Days has grown into a major-premier event with a core three-day schedule of associated events that attract over 30,000 spectators.

Over the years, Lost Dutchman Days took place at various arenas, different streets became the parade route, and various locations for the rodeo dance were always moving but the main factor remained, promoting the great town of Apache Junction and providing quality entertainment and fun for all ages. With the assistance of so many volunteers, organizations and the city, Lost Dutchman Days has grown over the years, far surpassing the founders dreams back in 1964.

Tucson Rodeo Circa 1989 Jr Rodeo

Kids ages 5 through 12 will be living out their gold buckle dreams in the same arena as the pros. Come out and watch the next future generation of pro rodeo athletes compete in each timed event!

The week-long event will also include an educational rodeo program called REACh. Where children are educated on the sport of rodeo and the benefits it can bring to your life. Schools K-6 are encouraged to bring students out for the presentation that will promote the future of rodeo.

Every year the City of Tucson, Arizona has done an amazing job hosting the rodeo. In fact, they have been doing it for almost 100 years! Even after nearly a century, one of the largest reasons for continuing the La Fiesta de Los Vaqueros Tucson Rodeo is to glamorize the western lifestyle. It makes for a great promotion for the sport of rodeo and to show just how hard those Cowboys and Cowgirls work!

So come on out and support the young cowboys and cowgirls, the Western Market and the REACh program! It will be educational and fun for children of all ages to understand the importance of our western heritage!

Artist Spotlight: Granger Smith

Artist Showcase: Granger Smith… if you would’ve told me seven years ago the amount of success this guy has had in that time I would’ve 100% agreed with you that it would happen. From the first time I saw in his song “Gypsy Rain” online I was hooked and then I found his fun videos that made me learn more about his personality,  which then made me even more intrigued about his music.

Coming to a small venue in Iowa on the Iowa State University campus for the Ag kids, the turnout told me just how big Granger and his new alter ego Earl Dibbles Jr was going to be in the country community. My first interview with him that night he said one of his goals was to get 1 million views on this new character Earls video. At the time that I’m writing this article it is over six million views, Soooo I’d say he hit his goal.

We will get into Earl more next article, but with the number one song and two top tens Granger’s sound and country roots are definitely what Country music fans are looking for.  Granger has been on the Texas music scene for quite some time. Each one of his albums evolving into a different era of his career. Back when I first discovered his treasure trove of youtube videos there was no one in the midwest who had seemed to hear of him, but that was before some of the streaming types of radio had gotten massive traction.

Songs like 5 More Minutes that grabbed at your heartstrings and his very popular Sleepin’ on the Interstate was  I found out how fiercely supportive of the military Granger is. Using military boots and the hill country of Texas he started a 100-mile walk with his band, brothers, and friends gaining national coverage of his support.

Then a few short years later doing a whirlwind run to stop at all the historical stops across the country plus his latest documentary film called “They Were There – a Hero’s Documentary”.  Along with all that he does along his tour stops for people just makes you appreciate him even more and with his latest albums, Remington and When the Good Guys Win, you get a mix of deep meaningful songs and songs like ‘Merica, and Don’t Tread on Me (featuring Earl Dibbles Jr.)  showcasing his patriotism for our great country with some humor too.

Granger has a road crew and band that are a tight-knit unit that has been with him for many years and they turn into a well-oiled machine when it comes to putting on some of the most fun shows for their fans. Going to his show also will not disappoint you… but make sure that you know the one phrase that bonds everyone there…and that is YeeYee.

From apparel, two energy drinks, two major TV network appearances, YeeYee has been called out through it all and shows no signs of wavering just like Granger Smith patriotism and dedication to support the country way of life.

It is hard not to support a man with a dream, a mission, and vision to bring his music to the masses and still be a family man with his beautiful wife Amber and three little ones that keep them both busy.  I’m very thankful to have been able to watch his success and getting to talk with him thru the years, I cannot wait to see what is next for him and there is no doubt we will be showcasing more of his songs right here in the future. Make sure to download “You’re in it” the latest from Granger. Here is just a couple of our interviews thru the years.
