5 Things Bucking Horses Wish You Knew

Our People Love Us. You’ll hear people who don’t understand us say we’re being terrorized and exploited for money. It’s not true. The old horseman’s adage ‘if you want to make $1M in the horse business, be sure to start with $5M’ is true for us, as well. Our owners provide the best of care and never micromanage. Our riders respect and admire us. It’s rarer than hen’s teeth that we’re ever marked by one of their blunt roweled spurs.

NOBODY Touches Our Junk. Part of our working tack is a fleece-covered, 3-inch wide soft latigo leather flank strap that is placed around what would be our waists if we were people. That flank strap is never pulled as tightly as the waistband of the cutest girl’s favorite pair of jeans. In our demographic, stallions are the least represented. We’re mostly mares and geldings. No nuts, see?

Our Job Description Beats YOUR Job Descriptions – Are you ready for this? The hardest working among us work under 3 minutes a year. That’s right. We work for 8 seconds at a time and give it 100%. Then we have weeks off to rest up for the next one. We need no micro-managed training because bucking is the most natural profession an equine can hope for. All horses are born knowing how and do it within an hour of their birth. For us, it’s a family tradition. Our moms and dads before us were great at bucking. So were their moms and dads. We’ve been being selectively bred for 14 generations (since the 1940s) and have it down to a fine art.

Our Pension Plan is AWESOME! We are born in the open, grow up under the sun and the stars. We have groceries delivered every single day. We aren’t asked to work until we’re at least 4 years old. Our careers span well into our 20’s with no soundness issues or maintenance required. We get regular hoof, dental care and occasional sports medicine specialties like massage and chiropractic sessions. But the best part? We retire right back to the vast grasslands we were born on with our family and friends.

You Know Those Fancy Warmblood English Horses? Yeah. Us, too! Our official registry, Bucking Horse Breeders Association, is pretty new, but our lineage isn’t. We’re warmbloods; a cross between heavy, draft horses and hot bloods like Thoroughbred, Arabian and even Quarter Horse families.

Red Cloud’s War: The Road To Sand Creek

Legends of the Old West Podcast are excited to introduce the first episode in their new season, Red Cloud’s War: The Road to Sand Creek.   As the United States expanded westward across the high plains in the 1840s and 1850s, its citizens began the slow destruction of the hunting grounds of the Lakota, Cheyenne and Arapaho. The tribes attacked travelers from Kansas to Montana in response.

But the tribes refused to take large-scale action against the white travelers, whom they saw as invaders until a cavalry unit in Colorado Territory killed 230 people in the Sand Creek Massacre. After that event, the warriors of the northern plains united behind a single leader for the first time in history, the great Oglala war chief, Red Cloud. In 1865, he led them to war against the United States Army…to find out how this story begins make sure to check out the full episode on Legends of the Old West Podcast, or listen & subscribe on your favorite podcast app.

New Tech in the Old West

Podcast creator speaks at Scottsdale’s Museum of the West on the revival of Old West for new audiences

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — “Legends of the Old West” podcast creator, Chris Wimmer, will speak at Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West (SMoW) during Western Week in a program called “Old West/New Tech.” The event will highlight the importance of embracing new technology to keep alive the culture and heritage of the American West. In addition, he will perform a live recording and answer questions from the audience.

The podcast movement is soaring as today’s on-the-go society grows more accustomed to having entertainment in the palm of its hand. “Legends of the Old West” uses thorough research, cinematic storytelling and engaging sound design to tell classic stories of the Old West. Like a TV show, audiences tune in each week for a new episode.

“As the only genuinely mobile form of entertainment, it’s perfect for today’s audiences who are addicted to smartphones,” Wimmer said. “I created ‘Legends of the Old West’ as both a show I wanted to hear and as a new type of vehicle to share these classic stories.”

Studies show podcasts are on the rise with all ages, particularly younger generations who have grown up with smartphones. In its first nine months, Legends has listeners in all 50 states and over 70 countries. It is the most popular Old West podcast in world, earning a 5-out-of-5 star rating on Apple Podcasts with 310 Ratings and Reviews in nine months. Its closest competitor with a 5-Star rating has 87 ratings and reviews in 30 months.

Listeners around the world download episodes of each new season to hear tales of icons like Wyatt Earp, Wild Bill Hickok and Jesse James. They hear the stories of events and adventures, from the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral to the Battle of the Little Bighorn and the Comanche Wars with the Texas Rangers.

A guest on an early episode of the show, veteran Hollywood actor Barry Corbin, discussed the need to maintain these stories and traditions.

“It’s important to us as Americans just as Greek mythology is to the Greeks, Norse mythology is to the Danish, Roman mythology is to the Italians,” Corbin said. “It’s that important to keep it alive. If we don’t keep it alive, we lose our national identity; we lose our self-identification as Americans. If we lose our history, we’ve lost everything.”

Event details: Chris Wimmer will be giving an audience a sneak peek into the creation of Legends of the Old West Podcast at SMoW during Scottsdale’s Annual Western Week celebration on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 from 1:00 – 2:00 PM. The program is included with $15 Museum admission. https://scottsdalemuseumwest.org/visit/museum-hours/
